Description
Issued by Whitman & Son during the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition, this brass token (Pa-Ph 494B) advertises a confectioners and merchants operating from Philadelphia. Philadelphia merchants associated with confectionery and chocolate, with five varieties spanning Pa-Ph 488-494. White metal tokens most commonly encountered. Pa-Ph 488-494 encompasses brass and white metal. The brass composition gave this token an attractive golden appearance, distinguishing it from the more commonly encountered white metal and copper versions of this merchant's series. Manufactured by Lingg & Bro. of Philadelphia, the primary source for custom merchant tokens during the 1876 Centennial celebrations. The Centennial International Exhibition of 1876 marked the first time the United States hosted an official World's Fair, using the occasion to display a century of national achievement.
