Description

This brass token (Pa-Ph 262B) is a self-advertising piece by Lingg & Bro., the premier token manufacturing firm of the 1876 Centennial International Exposition. Charles Lingg and his brother operated from 36 North 8th Street in Philadelphia, where they cut dies for dozens of merchant advertising tokens distributed at the Centennial grounds in Fairmount Park. This piece is one of their own advertising series (Pa-Ph 220-245), distinct from the merchant tokens they produced on commission. Brass Centennial tokens were typically reserved for preferred customers or sold at a modest premium over white metal pieces, resulting in smaller surviving populations. Lingg produced tokens in white metal, copper, brass, and bronze. At 285 acres, the Centennial was the largest organized event in American history to that date, with exhibition halls housing everything from massive steam engines to delicate Japanese ceramics.
