Coin Details
Description
Lingg & Bro. produced this brass self-promotional token (Pa-Ph 245B) to showcase their token manufacturing capabilities at the 1876 Centennial Exposition. Charles Lingg and his brother operated from 36 North 8th Street in Philadelphia, where they cut dies for dozens of merchant advertising tokens distributed at the Centennial grounds in Fairmount Park. The Lingg self-advertising series spans Pa-Ph 220-245 and represents the firm's own promotional efforts alongside their commercial work. The brass composition gave this token an attractive golden appearance, distinguishing it from the more commonly encountered white metal and copper versions of this merchant's series. Beyond Centennial tokens, Lingg manufactured commercial checks and trade tokens. Token varieties ranged from inexpensive white metal pieces distributed freely to visitors, through mid-range copper and brass issues, to rare silver presentation pieces for collectors.
Rarity Notes
