Description
Struck in brass, this token (Pa-Ph 244B) was issued by Lingg & Bro. to advertise their own die sinking and token manufacturing services during the 1876 Centennial. Charles Lingg and his brother operated from 36 North 8th Street in Philadelphia, where they cut dies for dozens of merchant advertising tokens distributed at the Centennial grounds in Fairmount Park. The Lingg self-advertising series spans Pa-Ph 220-245 and represents the firm's own promotional efforts alongside their commercial work. Struck in brass (a copper-zinc alloy), a premium composition for Centennial tokens. The golden color made brass pieces stand out among the more common white metal and copper tokens. The July 5, 1875 dated tokens mark the earliest known Centennial souvenir issues. The Lingg brothers' workshop served as a full-service token manufacturer, where merchants could select from white metal, copper, brass, or bronze compositions for their customized advertising pieces.
