Description
Struck in brass for the 1876 Centennial International Exposition, this token (Pa-Ph 206) was commissioned by John W. Kline, general merchant of Philadelphia. A Philadelphia merchant who commissioned three Centennial token varieties from Lingg. Three metals allowed distribution at different price points. Struck in brass (a copper-zinc alloy), a premium composition for Centennial tokens. The golden color made brass pieces stand out among the more common white metal and copper tokens. Manufactured by Lingg & Bro. of Philadelphia, whose workshop became synonymous with Centennial merchant token production during 1876. The Exposition's 285 acres in Fairmount Park contained five main buildings and scores of smaller pavilions where 37 nations displayed their cultural and industrial achievements.
