(1876) Brass Token NY-NY 752, H.W. Hoops
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This brass Centennial token (NY-NY 752) was issued by H.W. Hoops, an advertising token distributor of New York City. H.W. Hoops distributed five advertising token varieties during the Centennial year, including an unlisted Rulau variant of special collector interest. Tokens span at least three catalog numbers indicating multiple production runs. The unlisted variant suggests production records may not capture every combination. Brass tokens featured a distinctive gold-like appearance that elevated them above copper and white metal pieces in the Centennial souvenir hierarchy. Lingg & Bro. produced these dies from their Philadelphia shop, where they maintained an inventory of standard reverses that could be paired with custom merchant obverses. America's first official World's Fair opened in Philadelphia on May 10, 1876, marking the hundredth anniversary of national independence with a showcase of industrial and cultural progress.
