Description
Silvered white metal advertising token for the Cornell Watch Company of San Francisco, circa 1875. The Cornell Watch Company was a prominent California watchmaker and jeweler during the post-Gold Rush era when San Francisco was the commercial capital of the American West. Watch company advertising tokens were popular promotional items in the 1870s-1880s, distributed to customers as reminders to patronize the firm for watch repair and purchase. The silvered finish gave this token an attractive appearance appropriate for a luxury goods retailer. Silvered white metal, 25mm. During the post-war decades, merchant tokens documented the recovery of American commerce and the growing national interest in centennial celebrations that would culminate in 1876. California tokens are sought by Western Americana collectors and reflect the state's unique commercial culture, rooted in the Gold Rush economy.
