About This Coin
The 1875 Seated Liberty Twenty Cent is a United States cent from the Seated Liberty Twenty Cents 1875-1878 series — the first year of the series. In 1875, coins were struck at the Carson City, Philadelphia, and San Francisco Mints with a combined mintage of 1.3 million. This represents the highest annual mintage in the entire series, above the series median of 13,250. The obverse features Liberty seated on a rock, holding a pole surmounted by a Phrygian liberty cap in her left hand and a shield inscribed LIBERTY in her right and the reverse displays an eagle with outstretched wings. First and primary year of the Twenty-Cent Piece. Struck at Philadelphia, Carson City, and San Francisco. Public confusion with the quarter was immediate due to the similar size and reeded edge. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 5 grams, 22 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Collectors have identified 2 known die varieties for this date, including cud. Across its variants, estimated values range from $141 to $3.4K depending on mint mark, grade, and strike type. A notable auction result reached $84K in MS66 grade at Heritage Auctions. Designed by William Barber.
