Description

This brass medal cataloged as GW-838, struck from the third obverse die, continues the Lovett "Level, Plumb & Square" Masonic series, produced circa 1875. The third obverse die represents yet another iteration of Lovett's Washington portrait, with subtle variations that distinguish it from both the first and second obverse versions. Robert Lovett Jr.'s practice of creating multiple obverse dies for his popular medal series reflected both the practical need to replace worn dies and the collector demand for die varieties. The brass composition gives this version a warmer, gold-like appearance compared to the copper strikings. The Masonic theme of Level, Plumb & Square resonated with the large fraternal organization community in nineteenth-century America, where Masonic lodges served as important social and civic institutions. Washington's dual status as a national hero and prominent Mason made these medals appealing to both patriotic collectors and fraternal organization members.
