(1872) Medalet JAB-M9 White Metal, Kline Washington-Jefferson
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This white metal medalet cataloged as JAB-M9 depicts Washington and Jefferson and was struck by George Kline from dies originally created by John Adams Bolen. Kline acquired a number of Bolen's dies and continued to produce strikings from them, creating pieces numismatically distinct from Bolen's originals. The Washington-Jefferson pairing combines two of the most iconic American presidential subjects. The "1872" date reflects Kline's striking period rather than Bolen's original die creation. Collectors carefully distinguish between original Bolen strikings and later Kline productions, as the attribution affects both rarity and value. Modern commemorative medallions and fantasy pieces employ advanced minting technology including colorized designs, high-relief striking, and selective plating that would have been impossible with earlier production methods. Kline productions, while from Bolen's dies, represent a separate chapter in the medallic history of these dies.
Rarity Notes
Kline striking from Bolen dies in white metal. Generally somewhat more available than original Bolen strikings but remain scarce.
