Description
Featuring the Union shield obverse with its prominent IN GOD WE TRUST banner and the wreath reverse enclosing 2 CENTS, J-1043 was struck in copper during the final years of the two-cent denomination. By 1871, the two-cent piece was rapidly disappearing from commerce as the five-cent nickel rendered it redundant, yet Barber continued producing patterns for this dying denomination as part of the comprehensive Trade Dollar era program. The piece serves as both a metallurgical experiment and a memorial to a denomination nearing abolition under the impending Coinage Act of 1873.
