Description
An aluminum die trial with a reeded edge, J-925 documents the technical process of testing quarter pattern dies in the softest metal available at the Philadelphia Mint. Aluminum die trials served a specific diagnostic purpose: because the metal flowed so readily under pressure, it captured die details with extraordinary completeness, making even the finest engraving lines and the subtlest die polishing marks visible for inspection. The extreme rarity of this piece, rated R-8, indicates that very few aluminum die trials were preserved, with most discarded after serving their technical evaluation purpose.
