Description

Closing the entire 1870 Standard Silver dime pattern series, J-875 strikes the regular Seated Liberty dime production dies in nickel with a reeded edge. This is the only nickel striking among all 51 dime patterns dated 1870, making it unique within the denomination. Nickel had proven its viability for American coinage through the Shield nickel and three-cent nickel, but applying it to a denomination traditionally associated with silver was a conceptual step further than most 1870 experiments ventured. As the final entry in the most extensive denominational subseries of the Standard Silver program, J-875 brings the dime patterns to a close with a fitting rarity.
