$8,400 PR61 09-17-2020 Heritage Auctions
Description
A compositional variant of J-674, this proof two-cent pattern was struck on an alternative planchet as indicated by the "a" suffix. The testing of different metals with two-cent pattern dies in 1869 may seem academic given the denomination's imminent demise, but the Mint frequently used established die pairs to test new planchet compositions that might be applicable to other denominations. The two-cent piece's familiar design served as a useful standard for evaluating how different metals affected striking quality and visual appearance.
