Description
This proof two-cent pattern is the third variety in the 1869 experimental series for the denomination. The continued production of experimental two-cent pieces even as the coin's commercial viability faded may seem surprising, but the Mint's institutional pattern-making protocols operated somewhat independently of commercial considerations. Additionally, the two-cent planchet and dies were relatively inexpensive to produce compared to gold denominations, making the experimental program a low-cost exercise in design documentation.
