Description

This proof two-cent pattern from 1869 features the shield design for a denomination in its final years of production. The two-cent piece, which had pioneered the IN GOD WE TRUST motto in 1864, was now three years from abolition by the Coinage Act of 1873. Mintage figures had fallen precipitously as the nickel five-cent piece displaced the bronze two-cent coin in daily commerce. Despite this decline, William Barber continued the pattern program for the denomination in his first year as Chief Engraver, producing four experimental varieties that document the twilight of America's first motto-bearing coin.
