Description
The third and final quarter eagle pattern variety for 1869, this proof piece concludes the Reconstruction-era experimental program for the gold $2.50 denomination. J-771 represents the culmination of four years of quarter eagle pattern production spanning 1866-1869, a period that generated approximately six varieties documenting the denomination's design development during the post-Civil War era. The Liberty Head quarter eagle would continue through 1907 before being replaced by Bela Lyon Pratt's revolutionary incuse Indian Head design.
