1869 Proof Quarter Eagle Pattern - J-770, Gilt
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
A gilt version of J-770, this proof quarter eagle pattern was struck on a base metal planchet and gold-plated to approximate the appearance of the gold original. Gilt patterns served as economical surrogates for actual gold coins in design evaluation, allowing the Mint to produce additional test pieces without consuming precious metal. The gilding process created a convincing visual approximation of the gold coin, enabling meaningful aesthetic assessment.
