Description
This proof two-cent pattern from 1868 features the shield design that had carried IN GOD WE TRUST since the denomination's introduction in 1864. The two-cent piece was by 1868 in serious commercial decline, with mintages falling sharply as the nickel five-cent piece absorbed its role in small transactions. Despite this trend, the Mint continued producing experimental varieties, exploring design modifications that might arrest the denomination's declining relevance. The shield obverse with crossed arrows and olive branch remained the standard framework for experimentation, and the 2 CENTS reverse within its wreath provided the denomination's identification.
