Description
White metal variety of the J.A. Bolen token from Springfield, Massachusetts, circa 1867. This is the white metal (tin-lead alloy) striking of the same dies used for the copper Ma-Sp 43. Bolen typically struck his pieces in multiple metals to satisfy collector demand, with copper being the most common, followed by white metal, brass, and occasionally silver or gold. White metal strikings were often produced in even smaller quantities than copper versions. Bolen's meticulous craftsmanship is evident in the sharp detail characteristic of his low-mintage productions. White metal, 29mm. Tokens from the Reconstruction era document a period of commercial rebuilding, as merchants in both North and South reestablished trade networks disrupted by four years of war. Boston and its surrounding towns were among the earliest centers of American token production, with die sinkers like Joseph H. Merriam and John Adams Bolen establishing the craft.
Rarity Notes
Very rare. White metal variety of the Bolen token, produced in smaller quantities than the copper version (Ma-Sp 43). Bolen's multi-metal production practice makes assembling a complete set by metal an engaging challenge. White metal Bolens are prized for their sharp detail and silvery appearance.
