Description
This proof eagle pattern from 1867 features an experimental design for the gold ten-dollar denomination. The eagle was one of the original denominations authorized by the Coinage Act of 1792 and had long been a cornerstone of the American gold coinage system. The Liberty Head design by Christian Gobrecht had served the denomination since 1838, and by 1867 the Mint was evaluating modifications as part of its broader Reconstruction-era coinage review. The eagle's large gold planchet made pattern production expensive, limiting the number of specimens that could be justified for experimental purposes.
