Description
Copper token or medal by John Adams Bolen (1826-1907), the celebrated Springfield, Massachusetts die sinker and medallist, produced circa 1867. Bolen was one of America's finest private die sinkers, known for producing exquisitely detailed tokens, medals, store cards, and copies of rare colonial coins. His work is cataloged separately in the JAB (John Adams Bolen) reference. Bolen's pieces were produced in very small quantities, typically fewer than 50 pieces per die pair, making them prized by collectors. His Springfield workshop was active from the 1850s through the 1870s. Copper, 29mm. The late 1860s and 1870s saw merchant tokens issued in an economy transitioning from wartime disruption to peacetime growth, with centennial consciousness increasingly shaping commemorative designs. Massachusetts tokens reflect New England's long commercial tradition, from colonial-era merchants to the industrialized economy of the 19th century.
Rarity Notes
Rare. Original Bolen striking from the renowned Springfield die sinker's workshop. Bolen's pieces are keenly collected, with copper strikings being the most available metal (though still scarce). Also cataloged in the JAB reference series. Collected by specialists in American die sinkers, Massachusetts numismatica, and 19th century American medals.
