Description

One of the penultimate entries in the 1866 Shield Nickel alloy sequence, this proof pattern tests a composition from the very end of the testing program. The design elements — Longacre's Union shield with motto on the obverse, the numeral 5 with stars and rays on the reverse — are by now deeply familiar to anyone studying the series, but the alloy composition brings something new: a different color, weight, or surface character that distinguishes this piece from all others bearing the identical design. This interplay between constant design and variable composition is what makes the complete 1866 nickel pattern series one of the most intellectually engaging areas of American pattern collecting.
