1866 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-525
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
J-525 is among the final ten varieties in the 1866 Shield Nickel alloy testing program, positioned near the conclusion of the most extensive single-denomination pattern series in American history. The attrition of surviving specimens at this end of the series is pronounced — while earlier numbers in the J-470s and J-480s twenty or more examples extant, the J-520s and J-530s are known in far smaller numbers. This rarity gradient reflects both diminished original production quantities and the vulnerability of small populations to the random losses that accumulate over more than a century and a half.
