Description

Part of the extended experimental range of the 1866 Shield Nickel series, J-514 explores a composition or design variant that falls outside the main alloy testing sequence. Patterns in the J-513 to J-533 range may include what pattern specialists call "fantasy" strikings — compositions so unusual that they were never realistic candidates for adoption but were produced to satisfy collector demand or to explore the absolute limits of the Shield die's versatility. White metal, lead, and ultra-thin planchets all appear in this portion of the series. Despite their sometimes impractical nature, these pieces are valued by collectors for their extreme rarity and the unique visual effects that exotic metals produce on the familiar Shield design.
