1866 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-513
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Following the gap in numbering after J-512 (which tested a steel composition), J-513 continues the Shield Nickel pattern series with what may be a modified design variant or an especially unusual alloy. The jump from J-511 to J-513 indicates that the intervening J-512 occupied a distinct category, and J-513 may represent the beginning of a new sub-series testing variations beyond simple composition changes. The Shield obverse and stars reverse remain the constant elements, but this range of the series may include patterns with modified die details, experimental edge treatments, or combinations of design and alloy changes that distinguish them from the straightforward composition tests of earlier numbers.
