Description
Among the final alloy experiments in the standard Shield Nickel composition series, J-510 represents one of the last conventional metallic tests before the series transitions to the most experimental formulations. The pattern's significance extends beyond its immediate function as an alloy test — it documents the penultimate stage of a testing program that fundamentally shaped American coinage for generations. The Shield design struck on this experimental planchet would soon be refined for mass production, beginning a denomination that circulates to this day. Each surviving specimen serves as a physical artifact of the industrial and artistic processes that transformed a Congressional authorization into circulating coins.
