Description

This proof pattern tests one of the final alloy compositions in the primary Shield Nickel testing sequence. The extreme rarity of higher-numbered Shield Nickel patterns reflects both their limited original production and the passage of over 150 years, during which many specimens were lost, damaged, or absorbed into institutional collections. Surviving examples are prized by pattern specialists not only for their individual rarity but for the story they collectively tell about one of the most consequential design and material decisions in American numismatic history — the creation of the five-cent coin that would become one of the most iconic denominations in the world.
