1866 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-506
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This proof pattern from the upper reaches of the 1866 Shield Nickel alloy series may test a composition with a significantly different metallic ratio than the standard copper-nickel blend. The physical properties of a coin — its weight, ring when dropped, feel in the hand — were important considerations for a denomination that would be handled millions of times daily across the nation. Americans needed to be able to identify the five-cent nickel by touch in dim lighting, by sound when coins clinked together in a pocket, and by heft when weighing a handful of change. Each alloy produced a different sensory profile, and these subtle differences factored into the Mint's evaluation alongside more technical criteria.
