Description

This proof pattern introduces the IN GOD WE TRUST motto to the half eagle ($5 gold piece), one of the most historic denominations in American coinage. The half eagle had been produced continuously since 1795, making it the longest-running gold denomination when these patterns were struck. The obverse displays the Coronet Head Liberty design adopted in 1839, with LIBERTY on the coronet and thirteen stars around the border. The reverse features the heraldic eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows, now bearing the motto on a ribbon above. At 21.6mm, the half eagle provided slightly more working space than the quarter eagle for motto integration. The half eagle was a standard denomination in domestic commerce, and the motto's addition would ensure its visibility in everyday gold transactions throughout the country.
