Description

This white metal medalet cataloged as JAB-20 depicts Abraham Lincoln and was produced by John Adams Bolen circa 1865. The JAB-20 designation places this within the main numbered sequence of Bolen's output. This example is attributed to Bolen himself rather than later Kline strikings. The white metal composition — primarily tin with antimony and copper — offered a bright silver-like appearance at lower cost than actual silver. The Lincoln portrait medalet was inspired by the outpouring of grief following Lincoln's assassination in April 1865. As a small-format medalet rather than a full-sized medal, it was designed for personal carrying or small-scale display. Bolen's Lincoln pieces are among the most sought-after in his body of work, combining historical significance with the artisan quality that characterizes all his die sinking. The distinction between Bolen's original strikings and later productions from his dies by George Kline is critical for collectors and substantially affects value.
