Description

The 1865 Lincoln Broken Column medal is one of the most symbolically powerful mourning medals produced in the aftermath of Abraham Lincoln's assassination on April 14, 1865. The "broken column" motif is a classical funerary symbol drawn from ancient Roman and Greek art, representing a life cut short — a column that should have stood tall and complete but was shattered before reaching its intended height. Applied to Lincoln, the metaphor was devastatingly apt: the president was murdered just five days after Lee's surrender at Appomattox, denied the chance to see the reunified nation he had fought to preserve. The obverse features Lincoln's portrait, rendered in the grief-stricken style characteristic of the many memorial medals, tokens, and badges produced in the weeks and months following the assassination. The reverse depicts the broken column itself, typically shown as a truncated classical column with a draped mourning cloth, surrounded by appropriate funerary inscriptions. This imagery drew on the same visual vocabulary used in contemporary cemetery monuments and memorial prints. Lincoln's assassination produced a greater outpouring of commemorative medals and tokens than any previous event in American history. Dozens of different mourning medals were struck by private manufacturers and by the U.S. Mint, reflecting the unprecedented depth of public grief. The Broken Column medal stands among the most artistically refined of these memorial pieces, employing timeless classical symbolism rather than the more literal depictions found on other Lincoln mourning medals.

Rarity Notes

Lincoln mourning medals from 1865 were produced in significant quantities to meet enormous public demand, but surviving examples in high grade are uncommon after more than 160 years. The Broken Column variety is among the more recognized and collected Lincoln memorial medals.
