Description

This lead medal cataloged as GW-761 is a uniface piece bearing the inscription "Georgivs Washington Esq.," produced circa 1865. The uniface format — struck on only one side — indicates this may be a trial or proof impression from a die, or a deliberately uniface piece intended to showcase the obverse design without a reverse. The Latin-style rendering "Georgivs" (using the Roman 'V' for 'U') gives the inscription a classical formality appropriate to the era's tendency to elevate Washington to the status of a Roman republican hero. The lead composition was commonly used for trial strikes and die proofs because the soft metal reproduces every detail of the die surface with exceptional fidelity. The "Esq." designation reflects Washington's civilian status and Virginia gentry background. This piece served as a die sinker's working proof or sample, making it a document of the medallic production process as well as a Washington commemorative.

Rarity Notes

GW-761, lead, uniface. Possible trial strike or die proof. Very scarce due to limited purposeful production.
