Description
The 1863 Civil War patriotic token F-92/119j (GW-636) in nickel features an Indian Head obverse paired with a Washington reverse. This die combination juxtaposes two iconic American numismatic portraits — the Indian Head cent design and the Washington portrait. The nickel composition gives this token a distinctive silvery appearance. The Indian Head obverse (die 92) reproduced James B. Longacre's cent design in circulation since 1859. Pairing this recognizable federal design with Washington's portrait created a piece that looked semi-official while clearly serving as private emergency currency. Nickel strikings of Civil War tokens are among the scarcer metallic variants. The F-92/119j combination is unusual in featuring Washington on the reverse rather than the obverse, reversing the typical orientation.
Rarity Notes
Fuld 92/119j in nickel. Scarce composition. Indian Head / Washington combination is distinctive.
