Description

This copper Civil War patriotic token cataloged as Fuld-114/432a and GW-652 also bears the "No Compromise with Traitors" message, produced circa 1863. The F-114 obverse die differs from the F-106 die used on GW-655 (PCGS #785172), presenting Washington's portrait in a distinct style or format while maintaining the same belligerent reverse message. The existence of multiple obverse dies paired with the same reverse die was common in Civil War token production, as die sinkers created numerous portrait variations to maximize output and variety. The "No Compromise with Traitors" sentiment hardened throughout 1862-1863 as the war's costs mounted and prospects for a negotiated peace faded. These tokens circulated freely in commerce, spreading their political message through everyday transactions. The copper composition was standard for Civil War tokens, which were deliberately produced at approximately the size and weight of the Indian Head cent to facilitate their acceptance in daily trade.
