Description
The 1863 Civil War patriotic token F-105/199e (GW-621) in white metal features Washington's portrait paired with the star-and-eagle-with-ribbon reverse. White metal strikings of patriotic tokens were produced in limited numbers, for collectors or as presentation pieces rather than for commercial circulation. The GW-621 Musante-Baker number connects this token to the Washington medal reference, while the Fuld F-105/199e classification places it within the Civil War token series. This dual identity reflects the piece's appeal to two distinct collecting communities — Civil War token specialists and Washingtoniana collectors. White metal patriotic tokens present particular challenges for collectors due to the alloy's susceptibility to environmental degradation. Tin-based alloys can develop a powdery gray corrosion known as "tin pest" in cold storage, and the soft metal is easily scratched or dented. Surviving examples in good condition are valued accordingly.
Rarity Notes
Fuld 105/199e in white metal. Scarce composition for Civil War tokens. Condition-sensitive alloy.
