Description

This circa 1863 silver restrike of the William Pitt medal (Betts-516) was produced during the American Civil War era. Betts-516 is a variant of the William Pitt medal series honoring the Elder Pitt for his defense of colonial rights and opposition to the Stamp Act in 1766. The silver composition makes this restrike significantly scarcer than the bronze versions. The Civil War period saw renewed interest in Revolutionary-era heroes and their stands against tyranny, which resonated with both Union supporters who saw parallels with the fight to preserve the republic, and with medal collectors who took advantage of restrike availability. The Pitt medals are among the most historically significant in the Betts catalog as they document colonial gratitude toward their most prominent Parliamentary ally.

Rarity Notes

Civil War-era silver restrike, ca. 1863. Silver composition makes this scarcer than bronze versions. Rare.
