Description
Civil War-era store card from A.D. Wood, an Indianapolis, Indiana business. As Indiana's capital and a major railroad hub, Indianapolis was the center of the state's Civil War token production, with merchants using tokens as practical emergency currency. A.D. Wood issued 6 die varieties, more than most Civil War merchants. This brass striking (Fuld 460Z-1b) is common to somewhat scarce among the known varieties. Token production was a specialized trade ā die sinkers maintained catalogs of stock dies that merchants could pair with custom obverses. Store cards circulated as emergency currency after wartime hoarding removed federal coins from commercial channels. Brass strikings are among the more available variants, though less common than copper. George and Melvin Fuld's catalog remains the standard reference for Civil War tokens, with each variety assigned a unique identification number.
Rarity Notes
Brass strikings are among the more available metal variants, though typically less common than copper. With 6 cataloged varieties, A.D. Wood was a minor token issuer.
