Description

Judd-298, Pollock-350, is the second 1862 proof eagle pattern with the GOD OUR TRUST motto, presenting an alternative arrangement from J-297. Together, J-297 and J-298 show that the Mint tested at least two different configurations for placing the motto on the ten-dollar gold coin. The differences between the two varieties involve the specific location and presentation of the motto text relative to the eagle device. These patterns were struck in copper rather than gold for most surviving specimens, making them more accessible to collectors while still documenting the experimental designs. The eagle denomination would eventually receive IN GOD WE TRUST in 1866, four years after these patterns were produced.

Rarity Notes

Rarity-7 to R-8. Extremely rare. Similar rarity to J-297. Most known specimens are in copper rather than gold.
