Description
This gold medalet cataloged as GW-448 and Julian PR-29 combines a Paquet "P" obverse of Washington with a Jackson reverse, produced circa 1862. The combination of Washington and Andrew Jackson on a single piece reflects the political culture of the Civil War era, when both presidents were claimed as patron saints by the Union cause. The "P" on the obverse indicates Paquet's personal mark or signature die. The Julian PR-29 catalog number identifies this within the Julian reference of U.S. Mint-related medals. Gold strikings of medalets are exceptionally rare, as the precious metal composition limited production to a handful of specimens for the most discriminating collectors or for presentation purposes. The Washington-Jackson pairing connects the first president to the seventh, both military heroes who embodied national unity. This gold medalet is among the most valuable pieces in the GW series due to its precious metal composition, fine Paquet engraving, and extremely limited production.
