Description

The 1861 Clark, Gruber & Company Ten Dollar in bronze is an off-metal pattern struck from the eagle dies. The bronze striking preserves the design of the 1861 gold eagle, which featured the redesigned Liberty head obverse that replaced the distinctive 1860 Pikes Peak imagery. The ten-dollar denomination carried particular significance in the Clark Gruber series, as the 1860 Pikes Peak reverse variety remains the most celebrated Colorado territorial gold design. The 1861 eagle's more conventional approach still commands respect for its clean execution and historical importance. Bronze eagle patterns from Clark Gruber provide numismatists with an affordable window into one of America's most important territorial coinages, though "affordable" is relative when discussing pieces that may number fewer than ten in all of numismatics.

Rarity Notes

Extremely rare. Bronze eagle off-metal patterns are estimated at 3-6 surviving examples.
