Description
Frederick B. Smith (1811-?) and Hermann Hartmann (d. 1865) were medal and die sinkers at 122½ Fulton Street in New York City. Smith apprenticed under Charles Cushing Wright, one of America's most distinguished engravers, learning the art of medal cutting and die sinking. The partnership of Smith & Hartmann produced tokens, medals, and dies for other merchants during the 1850s and early 1860s. Their brass token (Miller NY-818) served as an advertisement for their professional services. Hartmann died in 1865, ending the partnership. Smith's training under Wright connected the firm to the highest traditions of American die engraving. This brass piece demonstrates the metal's popularity among token issuers seeking a premium appearance without the cost of precious metals. The golden brass alloy caught the eye and reinforced the merchant's brand. Cataloged as Miller NY-818. Surviving specimens in higher grades are scarce, as most tokens saw extensive commercial use before being saved.
