1860 Mormon Five Dollar - Lead Reverse, Plain Edge Restrike
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The 1860 Mormon Five Dollar lead reverse plain edge restrike preserves the reverse die of the 1860 Deseret Mint half eagle, capturing the clasped hands, "PURE GOLD" inscription, and "FIVE DOLLARS" denomination in soft lead. Together with the lead obverse restrike, this piece provides a complete lead die record of the 1860 Mormon gold half eagle — the last dated issue in the series. The reverse clasped hands motif carried deep significance within the Latter-day Saint community, representing both the fraternal bond between church members and the sacred covenantal handshake of temple worship. The lead impression reproduces these design elements with exceptional clarity. As the companion piece to the lead obverse, this reverse impression allows researchers to study both dies of the 1860 half eagle independently. The uniface format eliminates the alignment variables and opposing-die pressure effects that can influence bilateral strikings.
Rarity Notes
Extremely rare. Lead reverse impressions from the 1860 dies are among the scarcest pieces in the Mormon restrike series.
