Description

This 1859 brass token is cataloged as Miller Pa-215 and represents another die combination in the William Idler series from Philadelphia. The brass composition distinguishes this from the more common copper strikings, as die sinkers of the era routinely produced tokens in multiple metals to satisfy collectors who pursued complete sets. The Pa-215 designation indicates a different die pairing from Pa-211, potentially combining one of Idler's standard obverse dies with a different reverse die to create a new collectible variety. Idler's "Copy" designation in the title indicates this piece reproduces or references a historical coin or token design, consistent with his well-known practice of creating interpretive copies of rare American numismatic pieces. The brass composition gives the piece a warmer, more golden appearance than copper and was often chosen for tokens intended to simulate gold coins in appearance if not in value. Philadelphia's die sinkers competed for the attention of collectors at a time when American numismatics was transitioning from a gentleman's hobby to a more broadly popular pursuit. Idler, along with contemporaries like Robert Lovett Jr. and John Adams Bolen, helped establish the tradition of producing numismatic collectibles specifically for the secondary market.

Rarity Notes

Miller Pa-215 in brass is scarcer than the copper version. Brass Idler tokens are sought by specialists who collect his complete output by metal.
