Description
Judd-241 is the most commonly encountered 1859 French Head half dollar pattern, struck in silver with a reeded edge. The obverse displays Longacre's "French Head of Liberty" -- a Romanesque bust of Liberty facing right wearing a crown of intertwined oak and vine leaves with LIBERTY inscribed on a scroll at her neck. The reverse features a cereal wreath enclosing the denomination 50 CENTS, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border. This design combination was included in the sets of four pattern half dollars that the Mint prepared for sale to collectors, accounting for its relative availability. An estimated 50 or more silver examples survive today. The "French Head" design is considered one of the most artistically accomplished Liberty portraits in the American pattern series, and J-241 is the entry point for most collectors seeking an example of this celebrated design.
