Description
Judd-240b is a variant of the J-240 1859 French Head half dollar pattern, distinguished by a different metal composition or die state. The "b" suffix in the Judd catalog typically indicates an alternative metal striking of the same die combination. The obverse displays Longacre's "French Head of Liberty" facing right with a crown of oak and vine leaves, while the reverse features the cereal wreath with the fractional denomination, identical to J-239/J-240 in design. This variety may be struck in a different alloy such as aluminum or white metal, or it may represent a distinct die state not covered by the base J-240 copper listing. Variants with "b" suffixes in the Judd catalog are typically rarer than the base variety, as they represent off-metal strikings produced in very small numbers for Mint cabinet purposes or collector sale.
