Description

This gilt copper striking of Judd-256 is the same die combination as the standard copper J-256 dollar pattern, but with a gold wash applied to simulate the appearance of a gold coin. The obverse displays Christian Gobrecht's Liberty Seated design with thirteen stars and the date 1859, while the reverse features a cereal wreath enclosing ONE DOLLAR. Gilt copper patterns were produced at the Mint as a way to evaluate how designs might appear on gold coins, or simply as desirable varieties for collector sale. The gilding process involved applying a thin layer of gold over the copper surface, giving the coin a golden appearance while using minimal precious metal. Gilt strikings are typically rarer than their plain copper counterparts, as fewer were produced. Director Snowden was known for trading patterns to collectors, and gilt examples commanded particular interest due to their eye-catching appearance.
