Description

Judd-221 is a pattern quarter dollar struck in silver, featuring the regular 1858 Liberty Seated obverse paired with Anthony C. Paquet's first reverse design produced at the Philadelphia Mint. The obverse displays Christian Gobrecht's Liberty Seated design with thirteen stars and the date 1858. The reverse features Paquet's eagle with outstretched wings and a shield on its breast, grasping arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border and QUAR. DOL. Below. This coin represents the earliest appearance of Paquet's distinctive eagle reverse design, which he would continue to refine for use on larger denominations through 1861. The pattern was struck on both thick and thin planchets, and whether the actual striking occurred in 1858 or shortly thereafter remains debated among specialists. A dozen examples survive across both planchet thicknesses.

Rarity Notes

High R.7. Approximately 12 examples exist on thick and thin planchets.
