Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This 1856 copper campaign medal, cataloged as DeWitt MF-1856-3, was struck for Millard Fillmore's presidential campaign on the American Party ticket. This copper striking of the MF-1856-3 dies differs in composition from the white metal version (PCGS #929373), offering collectors two metallic variants of the same design. The obverse presents Fillmore's portrait as the former president seeking a return to the White House, while the reverse carries campaign slogans and imagery associated with the American Party's platform. Copper provided a more durable and visually attractive medium than white metal, with the reddish-brown surface developing a natural patina over time. The 1856 election represented Fillmore's final attempt at public office, and his poor showing — winning just 21.6 percent of the popular vote — marked the effective end of the Know-Nothing movement as a national political force. Campaign tokens from the American Party are studied by political historians as material evidence of mid-nineteenth-century nativism, a recurring theme in American political culture.
Rarity Notes
DeWitt MF-1856-3 in copper. Companion to the white metal striking (PCGS #929373). Copper Fillmore tokens are somewhat scarcer than white metal versions. Collected for both numismatic and political Americana interest.
