Description

This white metal campaign medal from Andrew Jackson's successful 1828 presidential campaign carries the DeWitt catalog number AJACK-1828-6. Jackson's rematch against incumbent John Quincy Adams in 1828 was one of the most bitterly contested elections in American history, with both sides engaging in unprecedented personal attacks. Jackson's supporters accused Adams of monarchical tendencies and wasteful spending, while Adams partisans called Jackson a military tyrant and accused his wife Rachel of bigamy. The white metal composition β€” an alloy of tin, antimony, and other base metals β€” was commonly used for campaign pieces because it could be cast or struck cheaply and distributed widely. The medal commemorates Jackson's eventual landslide victory, carrying 178 electoral votes to Adams's 83. Jackson's inauguration on March 4, 1829 drew enormous crowds to Washington, with supporters flooding the White House reception in a scene that horrified the political establishment but delighted the common people who saw Jackson as their champion. This DeWitt-cataloged variety is part of a substantial series of Jackson campaign pieces that document the birth of modern American campaign culture.
